30 Warrior Chonmage Hairstyles for Strong Men

A chonmage is traditional Japanese hairstyle for men which dates back over 400 years. The style is widely associated with Samurai warriors and Sumo wrestlers. Men all over the world are now choosing to pay homage to these chonmage hairstyles by wearing their hair up in a high top knot.

Chonmage Hairstyles vs. the Man Bun

Chonmage Hairstyle vs. Man Bun

In Japanese culture, a chonmage hairstyle is carefully styled by a professional. The styling was very important because it helped to show a lot about the prowess and social status of the wearer. A man bun tends to be much scruffier than a traditional chonmage hairstyle. Most people who wear their hair in a man bun style will pull their hair up quickly and be ready to roll straight away!

Japanese Traditional Chonmage Hairstyle Options

It seems Samurai, with their Chonmage or Samurai’s hair, were always fashion-forward. Styling yourselves with warrior-like aesthetics is raising bars in fashion these days. A traditional man who is also a trendsetter is everyone’s heartthrob. The quickest way of achieving that goal is turning your hair into a samurai top-knot or as this new world of 2024 likes to call it, man bun, bro bun, or hipster bun.

These types of hairstyles only need two things, long hair and higher knot, which is the crux of Samurai’s hair. Modern Chonmage hairstyles tend to take forms which are seen featuring varied lengths and cuts towards the sides. Below are some of the most popular and trendy chonmage styles for men.

#1: Mohawk with Chonmage

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about chonmage hairstyles.

Did all samurai wear a chonmage hairstyle?

Yes! The chonmage was strongly associated with the samurai. Long hair and beards were frowned upon during the 1600s, and by the end of the century, all men were required to shave the tops of their heads.

Do I have to shave my front hair to style chonmage?

Yes, a traditional chonmage features a shaved head. The proper chonmage style includes a shaved beard, a shaved pate, and oiled hair pulled neatly back in a bun.

How long does my hair have to be to style chonmage?

Your hair doesn’t need to be that long to style it into chonmage. The front is kept quite short, with the top fully shaven, and the back length only needs to be long enough to be tied into a small bun.

There's so much cringe in this. There's only 1 real chonmage, and it's the traditional one. The rest are try hards who are following a lame trend.
